Galileo Galilei - Luigi Maggi

Galileo is a film from 1908 directed by Luigi Maggi, an outstanding actor and director in the pioneering cinema that flourished in Turin in the early 20th century, distinguished from other more or less anonymous directors for his capability, talent and imagination.

This brief film, lasting 19 minutes, which was restored a few years ago by the Museo Nazionale del Cinema e Cineteca del Friuli, has a strongly anti-clerical tone and a dramatic plot. A servant tries to seduce Galileo’s daughter and, when rejected, denounces the scientist to the Inquisition. Galileo undergoes trial, is forced to abjure and, in the last scene, appears dying in his daughter’s arms, surrounded by a few faithful friends.
